Dover Beach Barbados

The sporadic traffic approaching Dover Beach Barbados is a familiar mix of cab drivers, delivery men, and local business owners.  Their ritualistic salutations are interrupted by loud splats coming from the side of the road.

Closer inspection reveals a small group of men playing dominoes near the parking lot.  Their animated conversation indicates that the game is heating up.

Charles, the water sports connection, lounges off to the far left, waiting to tantalize visitors with a taste of the Barbados beach culture.  It is quiet today, and it’s (s)low season, but a lot is happening here.  A game of beach volleyball attracts a group of young players, and across the street, a game of cricket* is under way at the Dover playing field.

This is St. Lawrence Gap (“The Gap”), and this is the scene at Dover Beach Barbados, one of the best Caribbean beaches and one of the most popular Barbados beaches on the South Coast.

* Cricket is the national sport of Barbados

The Gap is a magnetic hot spot and is within easy walking distance to its many amenities – nice beaches, beachfront restaurants, beach bars, hotels and guesthouses, water sports, car and scooter rentals, and gift shops.  Naturally, this attracts several types of special-interest travelers:

  • The “set-it-and-forget-it crowd” looking to play and stay on the Gap.  This crowd is a nice mix of visitors and locals who take part in water sports, land sports (cricket match spectators at Dover playing field), and nightlife.

  • The spring break crowd wanting to take advantage of the cheap area accommodations, local beach culture, and active night scene.

  • The family crowd traveling with kids looking for a vacation locale with kid friendly accommodations and lots of area amenities within easy walking distance.

  • Itinerary-free baby boomers looking for rest and relaxation

Like many other beaches in Barbados, Dover Beach is surrounded by many hotels and guest houses.  But this one is different.  The Gap is active, but it has a quiet side as well.  Dover Beach runs along St. Lawrence Gap and spans both sides.

At the northern end, you will find some hotels, restaurants, and good nightlife on The Gap.  At the southern end starting at the cricket field (Dover), you will find hotels, restaurants, guesthouses, and residential homes.
