Colony Club Barbados is the flagship hotel of the Elegant Hotels Group. It is the northernmost of the five properties, and if you are traveling with kids, this hotel is one of the best for a great Barbados family vacation.
The remaining four properties are The House (adults-only), Tamarind, Crystal Cove (all inclusive) and Turtle Beach (all-inclusive). Turtle Beach is the only hotel in the group located on Barbados’ South Coast. The first three are located on Barbados’ West Coast.
In my mind, the name alone conjures up images of snooty private club aristocrats decked in smoking jackets as they fill up the air with eye-stinging, lung-arresting smoke while they carry on their ever-so-boring conversations.
Please forgive my vivid imagination, but I might just be on to something. Here’s a little bit of history.
The hotel started out as a private club in the 1940’s. It was named after the famed Colony Restaurant in New York City and entertained the haute elite like the Vanderbilts, the Astors, and the Onassises. The restaurant closed its doors in 1971.
See? I wasn’t that far off.

Today, this classy hotel still commands respect and exemplifies style and grace. It is suitable for families with kids, solo travelers, girlfriend getaways, “mancations", couples, and groups (weddings, incentive groups and meetings). In other words, it works for everyone.
Colony Club Barbados is set on seven acres of lush tropical gardens. I call it “my garden of Eden” and if you ever pay it a visit, you’ll see what I mean.
The hotel fronts one of the Caribbean’s best beaches where you can enjoy the best Barbados family vacation.
Colony Club is located on the quieter side of the Barbados West Coast in an area known as Porters. It is approximately 5-7 minutes north of Holetown (a historical site), about 10 minutes south of the Port Ferdinand Marina, and just under 40 minutes away from Barbados’ main airport, Grantley Adams International Airport.
This beachfront property’s entrance is through a lengthy private driveway at the end of which is Heron Bay, a quiet West Coast beach. Heron Bay is one of the best Barbados beaches on the island’s West Coast and one of the Caribbean’s best beaches.
The hotel has seven bungalows with some rooms having private access to the lagoon pool. The room décor is classic Barbadian with natural wood furnishings, limestone walls and whitewashed ceilings – all reminiscent of colonial Barbados. Sliding doors lead to the balcony where the cool ocean breezes flow through a latticed arch on the balcony creating an even lighter feel in the room.
